New Removable Book Labels
The book label is a critical component for ensuring that the book gets delivered to the intended child. Our team is constantly searching for the best combination of functionality, features and cost, all while conforming to USPS regulations. While we’ve heard your requests to use a removable label on the books, finding a high quality, affordable option has been a challenge.
Book labels, even within the shrink wrap, are vulnerable to a number of variables such as humidity, temperature and friction, and they must be durable enough to withstand the machine and packing process – printing, placement, heat shrink wrapping, sorting, bundling and transport – all before being unpackaged, sorted and prepped for delivery by the USPS. Not only do some of the less adhesive labels end up detaching from the book in this process, but they also get into the ‘specialty label’ category significantly increasing their cost.
Fortunately, we have now found an affordable label that will stand up to the rigors of processing and delivery while still being removable. Though, we do still encourage parents to leave the labels affixed to the books at home. If a parent/caregiver believes the child may have missed a book, they can use the affixed label to determine the month in which it was received. In addition, as we all know, children love receiving mail of their very own, and having their name on the book makes them feel that this gift is very special. The pride of ownership they feel supports self-esteem, and, equally as important, encourages and reinforces the child’s attachment to books, reading and learning.
However, if you would like to remove the label in certain circumstances to protect your child’s information, you will find the new labels much easier to remove. We are running a final test on some of the books in the July 2014 mailing, and assuming all goes well the new ‘removable’ labels will be used on all books going forward.
